  • For today’s offering, the math is simple.

During August and September, I am focusing on editing the paired volumes,Chameleon’s Dish (Trueborn Weft series), and Bounded by a Nutshell (Trueborn Warp series).

Bounded by a Nutshell is my August WIP. It is a Star Trek fanfiction novel that tells the other side of Tisira’s story – her family’s search for her, after her sudden disappearance..

This week, we meet Tisira’s twin, Kirana, as she is reunited with her father after an unexplained absence of several hours, shortly after Tisira’s disappearance.

This is actually two passages; there was a bit in the middle that may not stay and didn’t fit the passage, so I pulled the good stuff from the edges and pushed it together. They fit together very well, I think.

This rough-draft passage is lightly edited to remove obvious gaffes and for style. Enjoy!

Kirana, though, seemed to sense her parents’ need to be alone together, and, maybe, even something of the importance of that need. Every so often, she would go quiet in her play, and study the door, her brows drawing together in exactly the same way Spock‘s always did when he was trying to decipher a puzzle.

But she didn’t say anything about it, or even ask what was keeping her parents so long, when she was accustomed to spending many hours a day in their company. She also didn’t ask why Spock wasn’t busy examining the device, or doing something to help find Tisira.

She just went about her play with Andrew…some animal game with an involved and ever-expanding cast of invisible characters. And every so often, her deep blue eyes would go to the bedroom door, and that frown would appear.

And every time she did, Andrew’s eyes would follow hers, and then he would hug her and add an element to the game, and Kirana would let herself be distracted into play once more.

Almost as though she understands, somehow, what’s going on in there. And why it’s going on, now, and that it’s too important to wait…

Finally, nearly eight hours after they’d gone into their room, the door slipped open to reveal Spock and Jeniah, dressed in matching robes, their faces still aglow with the secret hours they had spent together, watching them. Seth was sleeping in his sling, seeming perfectly content.

Kirana rose slowly from the rug where she had been pretending to be a grouchy old sehlat. She clasped her hands behind her back and looked back at them both, her expression, for a moment, as unreadable as Spock’s had ever been. “Father, art thee well?” she asked, formally, and in Vulcan.

For answer, Spock knelt on one knee, and gestured for her to come close. He himself didn’t seem to want to give up the doorway- maybe because he was not wholly certain that he was ready to rejoin the flow of life, just yet.

Kirana went, slowly, holding her father’s eyes with her own, as though she were feeling her way. Step by step, she advanced. Spock stayed still, not dropping his eyes, but stretching out his hand with two fingers extended.

Fingers that trembled, just a little bit, but enough to say clearly that even if he’d eased the immediacy of the situation, his eropsitone levels were still elevated, and he would not likely be up long….

I am – quite well, ti’kahm.” He too spoke in Vulcan, but fondly, with the hint of fire and amusement layered into the warm, rough tones. His eyes were intent on hers. “I regret if I caused you any concern.”

You are – different – ?” She tested the words. “No, not different, but also not as you have been.”

There we have it. Spock is not as his daughter has known him. Will this shift affect the search for Tisira? Spock’s relationship with Kirana?

No, I’m not telling you – not yet. There’ll be more, next week, and every Wednesday in September.

Here’s a song this scene reminds me of…a longtime favorite, with a fiercely wild and very fitting drama. Feel free to do your best 70s dance, or just watch and worry!=)

And now – release the comment hounds ! =)
