A Huntress is Born, Lives, and Stalks Through My Fantasies…

Monthly Archives: June 2013

It’s #WIPpet Wednesday again!

The purpose of  K.L,Schwengel’s brainchild  is to encourage writers to move their WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date.

WIPpet Math:

Today is June 26,2013.

  • Adding the digits of the date (2+6=8) takes us to Chapter 8.
  • Adding the month and the last two digits of the year (6+1+3=10), means that you get ten paragraphs.

Today, we have our last bitof Chameleon’s Dish for a few weeks- it and Bounded by a Nutshell are taking a July hiatus, so that I can be bringing you, instead, my July CampNaNo projects (two more intertwined novels), as they are being created.

Beginning next week, we will explore Niaan and Spock’s childhoods, and how they came to be husband and wife, in the Trueborn Genesis WIPs, The Stars are Fire (Niaan), and Perchance to Dream (Spock).

They will be based upon the 26 flash fiction pieces I wrote for the 2013 Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.

But, for now, we return to our little girl lost in the woods, unsure of where and when she is…

This scene takes place before the injuries I referenced in After the Fall and Upon Waking. Tisira knows who she is, and her memory is intact, other than during times when she seems to be gripped by a fever she calls soulfire, and which she knows comes to her through Father, who is desperate to have her back with him.

As we join her, she is just awakening from one of these spells…

Tisira came back to herself in a rush that drove her to her knees. She was huddled, naked and trembling, in the snow, in the midst of a small clearing …nowhere she knew she had been.

There was a pit a tenpace before her, and it was rank with the scent of bear…she scented, very carefully, keeping completely still lest the animal was still there…but the scent was not fresh and vital. The faint decay of early death was upon it – it was below freezing now, but had not been, in the day.

It was a day she could not remember.

All her memory held was the endless round of feeling Father, feeling them all, through Father – and having them ripped away again, and again, until her soul could hold no more joy and sorrow.

And through it all had been the flames, always the flames, singing, burning, consuming, and leaving nothing of her own free will….

She came aware enough to Change, and the solace of fur was delightful. She was tempted to dig a nest into the snow and curl within it, nose tucked under a paw.

But there was the pit, and the smell of bear, and death, even stronger with her Change- sharpened senses.

There was a boulder at the edge of the pit, and it bore her footprints, half filled in with snow. She had waited here – but for what?

She returned cautiously to the boulder, crept up, and peered down, ready to leap up again at the slightest sound or movement from the animal.

But the bear was dead, along with the half-eaten sheep it shared the pit with…

Ahh, a mystery. Maybe even a cliff (or boulder, anyway) hanger!

How did the bear die? Why is Tisira there? What’s up with this memory loss and the flames…?

Tune in during August and September, when this WIP goes into edits, to learn more!

Here is my progress on the current month’s noveling projects.

Since I posted and began following this plan, I have felt far more focused with my noveling. I have six novels in various states of WIPdom; and plans for at least three more, and all belong to the same double series.

With this plan, I know where to use my noveling energy, and that has led to two finished novel drafts, two new novels solidly begun, and steady progress made on another, which, when separated into fanfic and original elements, will become two books.

June is about endings (Blood and Breath); progress (To Be or Not to Be); and beginnings (the A to Z stories forming the foundation for my July CampNaNo bid as the Trueborn Genesis WIPs.).

There’s been craft research on both plotting and revising, and I feel more knowledgeable and better prepared for the next three months, at least, which will be rich in lightning drafting and editing.

So, what have I been up to, specifically?

June:

CompleteBlood and BreathTarget attained!

Add 25,000 words to To Be or Not to Be – On target..

  • Chapter Thirty- Six completed.
  • Chapter Thirty-Seven planned.
  • WIP total to date: 131,402 of ~ 200,000 words.
  • For June: 18,402 of 25,000 words.
  • Remaining for June: 7, 598 words.

Create rough plans for the rest of Spock and Niaan’s Trueborn Warp and Weft Genesis novels. On target.

  • These will carry both through the moment of truth when they choose their own destiny, by means of an act that cannot be revoked….killing Kaitiiraan, and accepting appointment to Starfleet Academy, respectively.

Niaan’s Genesis ( Working title: The Stars are Fire):

  • Story arc complete.
  • Early planning notes progressing.
  • Rock Your Plot: Story Question and Goal/Motivation/Conflict sections completed.

Spock’s Genesis (working title: Perchance to Dream):

  • Story arc: 7 of 13 stories completed.
  • Planning notes underway.
  • Files for pending scenes added.

Sign up for Camp NaNo. Target attained!

Reread and create rough To-Do lists for:

  • Instead of diving into this project when my plate is full, I read and highlighted Rock Your Revisions, and am currently in the process of creating a plan from it, which I will begin to pursue on August 1, or perhaps sooner.
  • Once the lists are complete for both, begin prioritizing , so that August and September can be used for focused editing runs.
  • Additionally, I have been sharing excerpts from both WIPs as part of the WIPpet Wednesday meme, and receiving feedback that will aid the revisioning process.

And what is on tap for July…..

July:

Begin Trueborn Genesis novels.

  • Goal- 100,000 words duringthe month (remembering that things may slow down during Rock the Campground).

By the time I update this plan again, it will be ROW80 Round 3, and summer will be in full swing. May you find fun, joy, and passion between now and then!

 It’s #WIPpet Wednesday again!

The purpose of K.L,Schwengel’s brainchild is to encourage writers to move their WIPs to publication by posting excerpts related to the date.

Until July, I will be posting excerpts from two of my Trueborn WIPs (works-in-progress);

  • Chameleon’s Dish, Trueborn Weft Series fantasy novel.

  • Bounded by a Nutshell, a Trueborn Warp Series Star Trek fan fiction novel.

These two series are interwoven. The plan is to offer the Warp Series fan fiction freely, and eventually publish the original fantasy Weft Series for sale.

About This WIPpet:

This passage comes from Bounded by a Nutshell.

Spock and his wife, Niaan, are aboard the Enterprise, en route to Gateway,  the planet that houses the Guardian of Forever, a time-travel entity, to seek help from Spock’s son Zar, in the past of the planet Sarpeidon. (If that’s confusing, and you are interested, you might watch the Star Trek Original Series episode All Our Yesterdays” and the A.C. Crispin books Yesterday’s Son and Time for Yesterday, which influenced this scene.

It’s a bit of an interlude, with foreshadowings of the chaos to come…and, like all of these pieces, it is rough. It will change, maybe a lot.

It’s an open invitation to WIPpet…WIPpet good!

WIPpet Math:

Today is June 19,2013

  • Adding the digits of the date (1+9=10) takes me to Chapter 10.
  • Adding the month and the last two digits of the year (6+1+3=10), means that you get ten shortish paragraphs, with dialogue.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But I will be mad, then…..soon. If I am not indeed mad now….
“Am I, Kiral?”
Awareness of where he was, and with whom, rushed in, and he sagged for a moment against Niaan, who supported him with her strength and certainty.
“Are you what, Spock? Checking up on your sanity level again, or something else?”
“Am I mad?”
“Yes. Not raving or dangerous, but you won’t operate within your normal parameters with any regularity until – well, I’m guessing no matter what your exact level of functioning is right now, you know when you’ll be back to life as you knew it.”
“When the Burning has passed, and the embers have died….only then will I begin to return to myself.”
“You are yourself, now, husband. And you will remain so.” Sensing his uncertainty, his apprehension and anticipation at Zar’s nearness, she slipped languourously into his mind. She rubbed herself against him, and her latent, everpresent sensuality sent runners of heat through his veins, into the pleasure centers of his brain, and his nerves sprang to life, singing in tune….
“Will you dance, my wife?” He spoke aloud, bowing over their paired fingers. He felt a need, in this moment when it was  possible, to court her, to offer her the small graces he was capable of. “Will you honor me with Matehunt?”
“I will, husband. I will dance, and I will Hunt with you -“
So, there you have it… a moment, poised at the edge of madness and desire, without toppling over.
I’ve streamlined this list, deleting all but the current month’s projects. This should make it easier to read and follow – for all of us.
Since I posted and began following this plan, I have felt far more focused with my noveling. I have six novels in various states of WIPdom; and plans for at least three more, and all belong to the same double series. It can be very easy to get lost in all the ideas, and stall out in a muddle of confusion.
With this plan, I know where to use my noveling energy, and that has led to one finished novel draft, already, one slated to be finished this week, two new novels solidly begun, and steady progress made on another, which, when separated into fanfic and original elements, will become two books.
And this month, I add editing to the mix, for two previously completed rough drafts…
It’s very stirring, and the ideas are flowing for at least three more volumes, which I hope to play with in 2014.
So, what have I been up to, noveling-wise?
June:
Complete Blood and Breath – On target.
  • 96,336 of ~100,000 words.
  • Chapter 18 completed.
  • Chapter 19; Scene 1 planned.
  • Complete by June 15.
Add 25,000 words to To Be or Not to Be – Pending.
  • Chapter Twenty-Nine planned.
Create rough plans for the rest of Spock and Niaan’s Trueborn Warp and Weft Genesis novels. On target.
  • These will carry both through the moment of truth when they choose their own destiny, by means of an act that cannot be revoked….killing Kaitiiraan, and accepting appointment to Starfleet Academy.
  • I began creating the story arc for Niaan, and taking early planning notes as I reread.
  • 5 of 14 stories added, through “In The Pridekeep”.
  • I have added files for scenes to be added, and considered secondary POV characters.
Sign up for Camp NaNo. – Pending.
Reread and create rough To-Do lists for:
  • Chameleon’s Dish– Pending.
  • Bounded by a Nutshell – Pending.
Once the lists are complete for both, begin prioritizing the lists, so that August and September can be used for mass editing runs….with lots of focus available. – Pending.
This week, we return to Bounded by a Nutshell, Trueborn Warp Series (Star Trek fan fiction)I played with the math a little to choose today’s passage: Today is June 5, 2013 – But when I chose the selection for this week’s post, I thought it was the 6th, and, since I like this passage, I am keeping it. I also really don’t remember what math I used to choose this (erroneous) passage.
This is therefore a potentially thoroughly random passage.
We find Leonard McCoy, serving as Spock‘s Kiral (a combination healer/butler/assistant/companion/sparring partner/brother-in-law/bodyguard) at the Vulcan Science Academy, where both their families are making their home. Spock is the Vulcan Ambassador-at-Large, and his daughter, Tisira, has recently been involved in a spontaneous time travel accident.
Spock has just spoken to Jim Kirk on the Enterprise, and it was a chaotic, distressing interaction. The Kiral is attempting to “mop up the mess”, while respecting Spock’s right to privacy.
This scene appears as originally written, cleaned up a bit for an audience.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jim was staring at the screen with narrowed eyes, but he was obviously trying to contain the rant Len knew was coming, unless he could defuse it, first.

“I guess you’ve got a question or two, Jim,” he said, going to the chair and avoiding the remnants of Spock’s glass. “I won’t betray any confidences, but you know that. Go ahead and ask; Spock has authorized me to speak on his behalf, until he’s able to speak for himself, again.”

Bones – I don’t even know what to ask. It’s clear he’s not all right, so that answers that……I guess I could ask if he will be, and if you have anything better than alcohol to treat him with.”

“He’s not sick, Jim – more – well, the Vulcan term is ahk’kah – “soulwounded”. Vulcans feel their family connections, to the depths of their beings. He’s sensed every one of his children from nearly the moment they were conceived.”

“And he can’t feel her, now – and that is – psychically – painful?”

An open invitation – come join us!

“He can feel her, Jim – but nowhere near the way he’s used to, or needs to. Spock – well, you’ve made yourself pretty scarce, so you can’t really understand the way he and Jeniah are with the children. You’ll have to see for yourself. But, Jim – it isn’t just painful. This is a shattering of his reality, and his psyche, on a level he has never experienced before. I’m not going to lie to you, Jim – if something happens, and Tisira dies, he might too. And, even if he lives, he might never recover fully.”

“Why does it always have to be that way, with Vulcans? Never, ‘It’s just a sniffle; he’ll be fine tomorrow, Jim’. It’s always something that could get him killed.”

“It is what it is, Jim. And he is who he is.”

“Is there anything else you can do for him?”

“Me? No, other than making sure he gets food and sleep, help take care of the children, and kept as calm as possible. As for the rest – I believe Lady Jeniah is taking care of that, already.” His smile said that it was the type of care only a woman could provide.

“That wine – I’m not sure it agrees with him, Bones. He was – ”

Len nodded. “A mess?” he asked sardonically.

“To put it mildly. Bones – I think he scared himself.”

“He’s terrified, Jim. And I know the feeling.”
